Ordinary household items can be converted into kids storage units
PICNIC TABLE UTENSIL HOLDERS-Designed to separate forks, spoons and knives, these are usually divided into four to six compartments. They work well for organizing craft supplies such as markers, crayons and paint brushes.
OVER-THE-DOOR POCKET BAGS- Choose one with clear pockets. Instead of putting it in clothes closet for shoes, hang it in the hall closet so hats and gloves are within kids reach. Or place it in the bathroom to corral barrettes, ponytail scrunchies and hair ribbon.
NAIL AND SCREW ORGANIZERS- Found in hardware stores, these storage units have anywhere from eight to sixty-four tiny drawers. They're perfect for storing childhood treasures such as pebbles, shells and stickers.
SHOE CUBBIES- Children like these wooden units because they're open and everything is visible. Instead of shoes, use them for stuffed animals or other small toys.
To encourage children to participate
In household chores, hand out age-appropriate assignments. When they struggle with a task beyond their ability level, it's frustrating for both of you. Consider letting them select their tasks from a list of all that needs to be done so they feel like they have a say in the matter.
Provide- clear instruction. Saying please clean your room doesn't provide enough direction for children to know where to start. Nor will they be able to gauge when they're finished. More effective: request that they drop their dirty clothes in the hamper and tuck dolls into bed.
Explain- not only what the chore is, but also why your child should do it. What are the benefits to her? If her room is picked up, will she have more time to play, be able to find the toy she's looking for and protect her dolls from getting stepped on and dirty? If she perceives the benefits to be important to her, she will be more likely to do the task.
Model-behavior by doing your homework at the same time they do theirs. An added bonus: working side by side, you'll serve as motivators for each other and you'll both get done faster.
